World No Tobacco Day 2023: Today ‘International Tobacco Prohibition Day‘ i.e. ‘World No Tobacco Day’ is being celebrated all over the world. This special day is celebrated with the aim of preventing people from consuming tobacco and making them aware of the harm caused by it. Tobacco use kills more than 8 million people worldwide every year. Despite this people do not stop consuming tobacco. The WHO theme for this year’s World No Tobacco Day is ‘We need food, not tobacco’.
History of World No Tobacco Day-
In view of the continuous increase in the number of deaths due to tobacco consumption, the World Health Organization decided to celebrate Tobacco Prohibition Day in the year 1987. After which, for the first time in the year 1988, World No Tobacco Day was celebrated in the month of April. However, later a date was fixed in the month of May to celebrate it.
Importance of World No Tobacco Day-
The purpose behind celebrating ‘World No Tobacco Day’ is to make aware the crores of people around the world who, despite knowing about the harm caused by tobacco, do not refrain from consuming it. On this day all those people are reminded about the diseases caused by tobacco such as lung and mouth cancer, heart disease, respiratory disease.
Theme of World No Tobacco Day-
The WHO theme for this year’s World No Tobacco Day is ‘We need food, not tobacco’. While last year its theme was ‘Protect the environment’.
